According to French publication Le10Sport, Liverpool are considering a summer deal for Lorient left-back Raphael Guerreiro – although we’ll have to fight off the attention of PSG and Arsenal.
Guerreiro is a 22-year-old Portuguese international enjoying the breakthrough season of his career in Ligue 1. From left-back, Guerreiro has scored three goals and assisted two others this term, establishing himself as first-choice for the national squad ahead of Fabio Coentrao just in time for Euro 2016.
He’s a marauding, offensive fullback – but so is our current incumbent Alberto Moreno – who’s been so heavily criticised by Reds recently.
Like Moreno, Guerreiro is best when bombarding forward and most effective in the opposition half, although he’s slightly taller and better aerially than our Spaniard of similar age.
Our worries with Guerreiro is that he’d be very similar to Moreno – offensively promising and defensively naive.
Nathaniel Clyne has done well at Liverpool because he’s focussed on his responsibilities at the back first, aiding the attack when the time’s been right.
With Jon Flanagan fit and signing a new contract, it’s unclear if we sill strengthen the fullback areas this summer.
Jose Enrique will surely leave, but Flanagan’s capable of playing on either flank, as is Clyne. With Brad Smith emerging – we have Flanagan, Clyne, Moreno and Smith – though it’s possible Jurgen Klopp will want to upgrade the left-back.
