Steven Gerrard was worried in 2011 that Charlie Adam would end up replacing him in central midfield.
Liverpool signed the Scottish midfielder from relegated Blackpool that summer, alongside Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, with Kenny Dalglish given serious cash by FSG to improve the starting XI.
Adam struggled at Anfield and was sold after one season though, while Gerrard continued in our starting XI until 2015, when he left to wind down his career in America with LA Galaxy.
Last night, Gerrard was inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame, and his former team-mate Jamie Carragher was invited on stage to say a few words about the legendary midfielder…
“What you see is what you get… He’s a miserable bastard!” Carra began, reports the Mirror, before explaining Gerrard’s anxiety about his spot in the team six years ago…
“It’s only f***ing Charlie Adam!” was Carra’s response at the time – and in fairness – he wasn’t wrong!
Why a player like Gerrard ever thought his spot was up for grabs is anyone’s guess – but at least shows the humility of the man.
How we could do with both Gerrard and Carra back in our side at the moment…
