Thomas Lemar wants to play for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and not Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
That’s what was reported in the Independent by Miguel Delaney yesterday, anyway.
The article suggests that Liverpool will go in for the 22-year-old France international this January, having had initial bids rejected for Lemar in the summer.
Arsenal had a whopping £90m bid turned down on deadline day too and while they’re still keen, Lemar’s preference for Anfield will obviously help our chances.
Liverpool obviously travel to the Emirates to face Arsenal in a crunch clash on Friday, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain choosing us over staying in London a few months back.
This is one we actually think will get done. Klopp desperately wants Lemar and Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, having already secured Naby Keita for summer 2018. Providing Monaco are willing to do business – and having been knocked out of Europe, they likely will – Liverpool will test the waters.
We’ve got money burning the club pockets having not spent heavily in the summer window, so we’d assume FSG will meet the asking price Monaco set.
That being said, £90m is way, way too expensive considering Lemar’s lack of experience – but this is the market the club lives in. If Klopp wants Lemar, Liverpool should get it done. Every other big transfer he’s made, Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – look like brilliant pieces of business.
