Jurgen Klopp has claimed Simon Mignolet will never mess up in the manner he did against Arsenal again.
The Belgian allowed a powerfully struck but central shot from Granit Xhaka into his net, which contributed to Liverpool throwing away our initial two goal lead.
Eventually we drew 3-3, but dominated the game and only failed to leave the Emirates with three points due to typically sloppy defending.
According to Klopp, Mignolet’s mistake was a complete one-off.
“We don’t talk about that. It’s my job. It’s obvious. Everyone saw the mistakes,” Klopp said, reported in the Express.
“That will NEVER happen again with Simon. He has never conceded a goal like that – so we don’t have to make a big deal of it.”
The 29-year-old is not a bad goalkeeper. He’s a pretty good goalkeeper in fact, but doesn’t the fact we’re still having this conversation almost five years after he arrived suggest he’s maybe not up to scratch?!
At the end of the day, he’ll play well for a few months and then cost us a game. His saves:shot ratio has always been quite poor and there is no indication he instils confidence into his backline, either.
He’s a nice lad and a very decent Premier League stopper, but he’d get nowhere the starting XIs of Chelsea, Tottenham or either Manchester club.
Liverpool should throw all the money at the world at Jan Oblak or Gianluigi Donarumma, but we won’t.
