John Arne Riise was absolutely spot on in his analysis of Virgil van Dijk following Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Spurs today.
The Dutchman was jaw-droppingly good for us – at pretty much everything. He made countless headed clearances, won tackles and interceptions, passed the ball superbly and led his team courageously.

James Milner wears the armband and leads by example, but van Dijk is the on-field captain.
Harry Kane, who is without question one of the best strikers in the world, literally didn’t get a sniff.
Riise named our Dutch no.4 the best centre-back on the planet, and we couldn’t agree more.
Bar Sergio Ramos and maybe Diego Godin, nobody else is even in the debate.
We certainly wouldn’t swap him for anybody in the Premier League; that’s for sure.
Even when the front-three isn’t necessarily clicking, we’ll still win games with van Dijk marshalling our backline.
The best CB in the world is @VirgilvDijk 👏🏻⚽️ The difference he has made since he came. So calm. Can play. Strong in the air. Power! Pure power! Big fan! And he wasn’t worth the money😂 Bet every club wished they had him now 🕺🔝
