Sunday’s biggest stories for the Reds…
Sterling can be as good as Ronaldo
Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling has what it takes to be as good as Real Madrid superstar and World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo.
Liverpool face the daunting task of halting the man Rodgers rates as the best player in the world on Tuesday night when they travel to face European champions Real Madrid in the Bernabeu, but Rodgers thinks Sterling has what it takes to emulate his icon.
“I would argue that, at 19, Raheem has had a similar impact on the game to Ronaldo at the same age,” said Rodgers.
Liverpool determined to land Barca winger
Liverpool are prepared to outbid Premier League rivals Arsenal in order to land Barcelona winger Pedro, who has been reduced to a bit-part role with the Catalans since the summer arrival of former Reds star Luis Suarez.
And with the Gunners looking set to swoop, Liverpool have reportedly joined the race – and will offer more than Arsenal to secure the forward.
Barcelona are said to be looking for about £25m for the sensation and will be happy to let him go if they receive a bid in that region.
Gerrard to get new deal
Brendan Rodgers has insisted that club captain Steven Gerrard remains a big part of his plans, and has reportedly told the club’s American owners to offer the midfielder a new deal.
Gerrard, 34, who has less than a year left on his current deal, voiced his frustration at not being offered fresh terms during the week when he said he could join another club next summer.
But Rodgers, speaking after Liverpool had lost 1-0 at Newcastle, said: “I met with Steven’s representative last week and made it clear that he remains a big part of what we are trying to do.
Liverpool continue keeper search
Liverpool are ready to replace Simon Mignolet with Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto, after growing frustrated with the inconsistent performances of their current number one.
Belgian stopper Mignolet has come under scrutiny for his performances this season, which has seen Liverpool already lose six matches in all competitions.
Brazilian under-23 star Neto is out of contract with the Serie A team at the end of the current season but it is expected that he will be offered a new deal to stay in Italy.
Real Madrid midfielder available on loan
Arsenal and Liverpool are both interested in taking Asier Illarramendi on loan in January, with the Basque midfielder having failed to impress at Real Madrid since his £25m summer 2013 move from Real Socieded.
Illarramendi could be available on a six-month deal in January, with both English sides looking for improved options in the centre of midfield.
The players main strength is his passing ability, but he has failed to show the star qualities which made him a sought-after La Liga name at Sociedad.
