Belgian will not sign for Liverpool on a Bosman, despite deluded claims in the Metro…
The Metro reckons that we’ve made Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen a prime January transfer target following this season’s defensive struggles.
The reports are mainly based on the fact the Metro thinks the Belgian international’s contract expires in the summer, and that Mauricio Pochettino would rather cash in on the 27-year-old instead of letting him leave for free…
However, this doesn’t appear to be the case.
The Daily Mail reference Vertonghen’s contract expiration date as 2018, while Transfermarkt state that it expires in 2016, with the centre-back having signed a four year deal upon his arrival in 2012.
The player himself though has claimed he won’t extend his White Hart Lane deal due to it having FOUR YEARS left to run, meaning it won’t run out until 2018…
“I am not signing, no,” Vertonghen said. “We agreed not to.
“I would prefer not to say why. I still have four years left. I am happy at the club and I think they are happy with me. That’s where it ends.”
So, although (at his best) Vertonghen could boost our struggling back-line, it’s best to take this particular transfer rumour with a very, very large pinch of salt; and hope the Metro do their research a little more thoroughly.
