Jamie Carragher, our former central defender, has named his greatest XI, compiled only of stars he lined up alongside…
He’s left out Fernando Torres, Javier Mascherano, and a host of players who he won the Champions League with in 2005!
What do you make of his selections…?
GK) Pepe Reina
The Spaniard won the FA Cup in 2006, and the League Cup in 2012 with the Reds, but left permanently this summer to act as Manuel Neuer’s backup at Bayern Munich.
DR) Steven Finnan
Easily Liverpool’s most consistent right-back of modern times, Finnan arrived for a modest fee from Fulham back in 2003, but exceeded expectations throughout his six year stay.
DC) Sami Hyypia
Liverpool’s best Premier League defender by some distance, the giant Finn was a rock at the heart of our back-four for a decade. His partnership with Carragher in central defence was key to our successful Champions League campaign in 2005.
DC) Daniel Agger
The fans’ favourite left to join boyhood club Brondby in the summer, nine years after Rafa Benitez brought him to Anfield. Agger was technically excellent, but injuries meant he could never develop into a truly world-class centre-back.
DL) John-Arne Riise
The Norwegian was most famous for his thunderous left foot, which helped him bag 30 Liverpool goals. His free-kick against Manchester United will be spoken about on the Kop for years and years to come.
MC) Dietmar Hamann
The German was calm, cool and effortlessly effective in the centre of midfield. His half-time introduction against AC Milan in 2005 helped spark the best Champions League comeback of all-time.
MC) Steven Gerrard
Obviously, Gerrard makes Carragher’s team, as he would everybody else’s. Not much more needs to be said on the greatest midfielder we’ve ever had.
MC) Xabi Alonso
How Liverpool fans would love the brilliant Spaniard to still be on our books… Alonso’s wonderful array of passing and jaw-dropping technique formed part of the best midfield trio in the world at the time – alongside Gerrard and Javier Mascherano. Alonso moved to Real Madrid for big money in 2010, and is now starring for Bayern Munich in Germany.
FC) Luis Suarez
Suarez and Carragher only played together for 18 months, but the Englishman saw enough to select him in this side, ahead of Fernando Torres, who peaked alongside Carragher in the Liverpool side.
FC) Michael Owen
Carragher and Owen entered the Liverpool side at roughly the same time, and were both in the side during the five-cup winning season, that saw Owen win a Ballon d’Or for 2001.
FC) Robbie Fowler
Known as ‘God’ on the Anfield terraces, Fowler was worshipped at Liverpool during the 1990s, before he left to join Leeds in 2001. He returned in 2006, adding six to the 120 Premier League goals he’s already bagged for us.
