Below, we rank the top five matches ever played between the two teams:
5) 31.01.1976 – West Ham 0-4 Liverpool (First Division)
A hat-trick from John Toshack and a fourth from Kevin Keegan secured Liverpool an outstanding result at Upton Park, bringing to end a run of four games without a win. The Reds would go onto win the first division title, a point ahead of Queens Park Rangers. West Ham finished in 18th place.
4) 06.09.1965 – West Ham 1-5 Liverpool (First Division)
Liverpool’s biggest ever win at Upton Park saw the Reds secure a comfortable victory. Roger Hunt scored three, while Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan completed the scoring. Liverpool would again win the first division by six points, with Leeds United finishing second. West Ham came in 12th place.
3) 15.11.1969 – Liverpool 2-0 West Ham (First Division)
Chris Lawler and Bobby Graham secured the 2-0 win at Anfield. The game starred on the first colour broadcast of ‘Match of the Day’. Five years earlier, Liverpool had also been chose for the first black-and-white transmission. Liverpool went on to come fifth, Everton won the league and West Ham came 17th.
2) 01.04.1981 – Liverpool 2-1 West Ham (League Cup)
Liverpool won the League Cup for the first time in a replay at Villa Park. Club legends Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen scored the goals in a 2-1 win. The Reds would also go on to win the European Cup under Bob Paisley, although a disappointing league campaign saw us finish fifth.
1) 13.05.2006 – Liverpool 3-3 West Ham (FA Cup)
Steven Gerrard scored twice as Liverpool came from behind to win the FA Cup. The skipper’s second goal came deep, deep into second-half stoppage time, taking the match into extra time. The Reds would go on to win on penalties in the game that became known as the ‘Gerrard Final’.
