With Steven Gerrard set to leave us at the end of the season and join MLS side LA Galaxy, Brendan Rodgers is all too aware of the need to find a suitable replacement, and ideally have a deal in place before the start of the summer transfer window.

Record claims that we sent scouts to Portugal last weekend, where they attended Lisbon’s 3-0 defeat against Porto, with Carvalho believed to be the primary target of their talent investigation.

Carvalho has been linked with both Arsenal and Manchester United in the past, having been touted around by his agent – Jorge Mendes – last summer, but there haven’t yet been any takers.

The 22-year-old Portuguese international is a defensive midfielder by trade, and has become an integral part of Lisbon’s side over the last couple of seasons, winning multiple ‘player of the month’ awards.

He’s big, powerful, and contributes defensively and offensively – but doesn’t possess the technical ability or drive of our skipper – although that’s hardly anything to be ashamed of.
