The 24-year-old, who joined us from Nacional in 2011, has managed just 24 appearances during his time on Merseyside – failing to live up to the huge potential he showed in the Copa America tournament that year. It was easy to think at that point that we were signing one of the most promising centre backs in the world at the time, but it hasn’t worked out for either party. Coates missed the entire 2013-14 campaign due to injury, and has struggled to establish himself since.

Reports in the Liverpool Echo suggest the player is highly unlikely to return for a long-term future at Liverpool, but reveal that he remains keen on remaining in England beyond the end of the current campaign.

There is a huge amount of competition for places at Anfield, with Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Emre Can, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure all ahead of him in Brendan Rodgers’ pecking order.

His move to Sunderland was widely seen as his final chance to prove himself, but he’s been restricted to just a handful of appearances. Despite his lack of success, he remains upbeat.

He told reporters: “During my time in England, I’ve not had as many matches as I wanted. When the year loan is over, I will talk about what to do next.

“But my goal is to stay in England because it is the best football in the world. It’s a very competitive league.”
