The Daily Mirror report that we made an approach for the Wales captain two years ago, as Rodgers has long been an admirer of his former player. And he is now ready to renew that interest, following a season of difficulties with our current crop of defenders.
One stumbling block may prove to be the long-term contract that the 30-year-old signed last year, which was set to keep him at the Liberty Stadium until 2018. However, the Mirror suggest that this will not be a major issue, with the player set to jump at a chance to move to a huge club.
Williams has played in every single Premier League game for Garry Monk’s side this season, and has helped the Swans to what will probably be a safe top-half finish. They have already equalled their best points total in the top flight, and have six games to beat it.
Williams is not a bad defender, but does he have the requisite quality of a side with Champions League ambitions? No. Probably not.
