Our pursuit of Memphis Depay is over, and Manchester United have won the race for his signature…
According to AD/Sportswereld (via the Liverpool Echo), Depay met with his former international manager Louis van Gaal to discuss a potential move to Old Trafford and was happy with the talks. Marcus Christenson from The Guardian tweeted confirmation of the move too, before United’s official account did.
While disappointing, the news won’t come as any great surprise to many Liverpool fans. The Echo told us last week that the Reds had cooled interest in the PSV Eindhoven star so as to concentrate on signing strikers. And despite scoring 27 times in all competitions so far this season, Depay is not an out-and-out centre forward.
Indeed, the Reds are instead thought to be close to a deal for French youth team international forward Paul-Georges Ntep – the full story for which you can read HERE (via L’Equipe), who strangely, has predominantly played on the left wing himself this term.
Let’s just hope that allowing 21-year-old Depay, undoubtedly one of the finest young players in world football, to get away from us, isn’t something that we will live to regret in the future.
