Despite being highly thought of at Goodison Park, the 21-year-old is out of contract in the summer, and according to the Metro, that has tempted us into considering a move for the youngster.
There is little question that the former Leeds trainee is not ready for the first-team on a regular basis, and that may be a couple years away at least. He has made just four Premier League appearances this season.
He’s played a further handful of games coming from the Europa League, and with a lack of a fee required, it may prove to be a decent acquisition.
The left-back area has been problematic for us this year when Alberto Moreno has been unavailable. Glen Johnson has filled in there, and has looked largely uncomfortable. Should he leave when his own contract expires at the end of the season, we will look desperately short of options. If Moreno misses another ten games – like he has done this year – then that will allow for Garbutt to continue his development gradually.
In his brief career, he has displayed some moments of decent defending. But, his main attribute at the moment is his delivery from crosses. He is able to float the ball in, or curl it around the back line with ease, and can do it from almost any distance. That ability to transform from defender into provider is important, should our only width come from Brendan Rodgers employing wing-backs.
