At the start of next month Adam Bogdan (via BBC Sport) will become the eleventh goalkeeper since the turn of the decade to take up the mantle of Liverpool’s ‘number two’ man between the posts.

Arguably the back-up keeper position is one of the most difficult to fill – very few players are going to be content with primarily sitting on the bench and watching someone else do their job. Equally, for a club, it’s frustrating to pay someone that barely features a significant wage – which limits who we’re going to be able to get.
Unsurprisingly, we’ve had something of a mixed record with our goalkeepers over the years. In the list below, we rate the ten players Adam Bogdan will be trying to surpass during his time on Merseyside.
Brad Friedel (1997-2000, Rating: 7)
The American joined us from Columbus Crew and spent his time at Anfield playing second fiddle to David James and Sander Westerveld. He made 25 league appearances in total and went on to excel with Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.
Pegguy Arphexad (2000-2003, Rating : 5)
Arphexad picked up six winners medals during his time with Liverpool despite barely featuring for us. He was decent when called upon but only made six Premier League appearances in total. He joined Coventry City before retiring from football in 2005.
Chris Kirkland (2001-2006, Rating: 6)
There was a lot expected of the young Englishman when he signed for Liverpool from Coventry City. However, he was never able to establish himself as first choice, with the Reds preferring Jerzy Dudek. He went on loan to Wigan before signing for them permanently.
Scott Carson (2005-2008, Rating: 6)
Another youngster who will be best remembered for his heroics against Juventus in the Champions League. He was on the bench that night in Istanbul for the final, when Dudek stole the show, and he left for West Brom after another couple of frustrating years.
Jerzy Dudek (2001-2007, Rating: 7)
The Pole was himself reduced to second choice after the arrival of Pepe Reina in 2005. He spent the remaining two years of his Liverpool career playing second fiddle to the Spaniard before making the move to Real Madrid, where he did the same job for Iker Casillas.
Daniele Padelli (2007, Rating: 4)
The Italian spent a forgettable year with us on loan, making just one Premier League appearance in a disappointing draw against Charlton Athletic. He returned to Sampdoria in 2008 and is now with Torino.
Charles Itandje (2007-2010, Rating: 1)
The Cameroon international was poor on and off the field. You’ll most likely remember him for all the wrong reasons – and his actions at the Hillsborough service in 2009. He was quickly dispatched to the reserves and never played a Premier League game.
Diego Cavalieri (2008-2011, Rating: 6)
He was quickly replaced by this man, who is now a Brazilian international. Unfortunately for him, Reina was one of the best goalkeepers in the world at this point and his chances were subsequently limited. He still played several times in European and cup competitions, doing okay in the process.
Alexander Doni (2011-13, Rating: 4)
Managed four Premier League appearances during two years at the club, in which he was again serving as understudy to Reina. He was forced to leave the club after suffering heart problems and has not played again at a professional level since departing.
Brad Jones (2010-2015, Rating: 5)
The Australian played 27 times in all competitions has he backed-up both Reina and Simon Mignolet. He was given a rare chance in the first-team earlier in this season but an injured against Burnley on Boxing Day handed the Belgian his place back. Jones never played for us again.
