Liverpool failed with £16.5m bid for Premier League striker in May [Gazzetta]

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport have intriguingly suggested that Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic has been the subject of interest from Liverpool, with the Reds making an unsuccessful £16.5m bid back in May.

Their claims have since been boosted by this story in the Liverpool Echo, which also includes mention of the rumour.

This is certainly an intriguing one. This isn’t the first time the Montenegrin has been linked with the Reds and the possibility that we will have made contract with City over a possible deal is not entirely impossible.

Admittedly, the Gazzetta have rarely proved themselves the most reliable of stories, but we will be interested to see if this one goes any further – particularly in light of City’s continuing interest in Raheem Sterling (via the Daily Mail).

With very few top level strikers appearing to be available this summer, we could certainly do worse than to sign this former Fiorentina hot-shot, who hasn’t got the look in that he’s deserved at City – mostly due to injury.

The 25-year-old has scored 11 goals in 39 appearances during two years at the Etihad Stadium, including one against Liverpool last season. He’s certainly going to cost us less than Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke – our other prominent target (via the Echo) – although the Belgian has a better record in the Premier League.

More questions than answers I’m afraid. Our wait for a new striker goes on…
