Where are they now? 15 forgotten Liverpool keepers, with Martin Hansen, Padelli, Arphexad, Luzi & more!

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Martin Hansen kicked off his five minutes of fame in style on Tuesday when he scored this incredible goal – video below – for Dutch side ADO Den Haag against defending champions PSV Eindhoven.

The 25-year-old stopper, who never featured for the Reds during a six year spell at the club, is one of many young goalkeepers who have come and gone without making an impact on Merseyside over the last 15 years.

There has been many a player to sit behind the likes of Jerzy Dudek and Pepe Reina in the Liverpool pecking order and only later prove what they were capable of. In the list below, we count down some of the least memorable members of our first-team squad since the turn of the century and ask, where are they now?

Here our are fifteen forgotten keepers:

Pegguy Arphexad (2000-2003)

Arphexad won six medals with Liverpool, all as an unused substitute, and he made just two Premier League appearances for us as he served as understudy to Sander Westerveld. He later joined Coventry City and went on loan to Notts County but was never able to become a regular. He retired in 2005 after a spell with Marseille.

Tyrell Belford (2009-2013)

Belford began his career at Coventry City before moving to Merseyside shortly before the turn of the decade. He failed to make a single first-team appearance for us, despite being promoted to Brendan Rodgers’ squad during his final season at the club. He subsequently joined Swindon, where he now serves as back-up to Lawrence Vigouroux.

Diego Cavalieri (2008-2010)

The Brazilian made eight appearances for the Reds – all in the cup – before returning home with Fluminense in 2011. He’s since become their number one and is closing in on 150 appearances for them in all competitions. His performances were even enough to earn him a brief role in the national team, for whom he has three caps.

Alexander Doni (2011-2013)

Another former Brazilian international, Doni made four appearances for us in total, but missed out on a potential FA Cup semi-final appearance against Everton after being sent-off during a league game. Brad Jones got the place instead and took over as our full-time number two. Doni was forced to retire for health reasons in 2013.

Peter Gulacsi (2007-2013)

The Hungarian international – who competes for a spot in the national side against current Liverpool number two Adam Bogdan – never played for the Reds, although he was loaned out by us on four separate occasions. He found a permanent home at Red Bull Salzburg, won the league twice, and moved last summer to RB Leipzig in Germany.

Martin Hansen (2006-2012)

A brief loan spell with Bradford City was Hansen’s only taste of senior football during his time with Liverpool. From Anfield, he moved to Danish club Viborg and then FC Nordsjaelland in Norway, before ending up in Holland last summer. He’s been a permanent fixture in Haag’s side and cemented his place in their history last night.

Paul Harrison (2003-2005)

Harrison struggled to find a home in English football, even after leaving Liverpool. He initially joined Leeds as part of the deal that brought Scott Carson to Liverpool, and subsequently joined Wolves, Chester, Hereford and Southport. He ended up at TNS in the Welsh Premier League and has since made more than 250 appearances.

Charles Itandje (2007-2010)

This goalkeeper featured seven times for Liverpool and was between the posts for our famous 5-2 win over non-league Havant & Waterlooville. His actions at the Hillsborough memorial service ended his time with us, but he’s since salvaged his career around Europe and is now with Caykur Rizespor in Turkey. A Cameroon international.

Paul Jones (2004)

The veteran keeper had a short-lived loan spell at Anfield, having joined us from Southampton, and played twice before returning to his former club. He finished his playing career with spells at Wolves, Watford, Millwall, QPR and non-league Bognor Regis. The Welsh international retired from football in 2008, aged 41.

Patrice Luzi (2002-2005)

As records go, Luzi’s for Liverpool was pretty good. He played only once, against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a game which Liverpool won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Bruno Cheyrou. His later career took him through Belgium and back to France, his nation of birth, but he has been without a club since 2010. He’s still only 35.

David Martin (2006-2010)

Martin started his career with Wimbledon before coming to prominence following the club’s name-change and the creation of MK Dons. Liverpool loaned him out on five occasions, having signed him 2006, but he was never able to make the grade with us. Instead, he returned to Milton Keynes and now plays for the club in the Championship.

Yusuf Mersin (2011-2014)

Signed from Millwall, the London-born keeper failed to make much of an impression at Anfield. With Tyrell Belford and Danny Ward dominating the Under-21 set-up, and Ryan Fulton the undisputed first-choice for the Under-21s, chances were few and far between. He’s now on the books of Turkish club Kasimpasa.

Daniele Padelli (2007)

Had a short loan spell at Liverpool, as he provided cover for Pepe Reina. He played in one game, a league match against Charlton, but failed to impress as the Reds were held to a draw. He’s finally been able to start playing regularly since joining Torino in 2013, where his performances have even earned him a call-up to the Italy squad.

Jamie Stephens (2010-2013)

Still only 21, Stephens joined Newport County after leaving Liverpool, before ending up at Barnet this summer. He’s still struggling for regular playing time but age is on his side and there should still be opportunities for him down the road. He’s also had loan spells with Airbus UK Broughton and Gloucester City.

Connor Wearing (2006-2012)

Struggled to command so much as a chance at youth level, let alone with the first-team. He eventually left us for Shrewsbury Town and more recently moved to Airbus UK Broughton – following in the footsteps of his former teammate. He spent the vast majority of last season on loan at Llandudno Town, helping them earn promotion.
