(Video) Stoke 0-8 Liverpool – Relive Reds thumping Potters in League Cup 2000/01

Robbie Fowler, Danny Murphy

We’d probably take a similar scoreline this evening at the Britannia, right?

At the end of 2000, over 15 years ago now, Liverpool destroyed Stoke 8-0 in the League Cup quarterfinal – racking up our biggest ever away win.

A hat-trick from Robbie Fowler and a goal apiece for Christian Ziege, Vladimir Smicer, Marcus Babbel, Sami Hyppia and Danny Murphy completed the rout.

If you look at the goals, Liverpool piled players into the box when we had the ball in wide positions, and our delivery from corners actually gave us a chance of scoring!

Fowler’s finishing was at its glorious best, and Peggy Arphexad was only really troubled when he passed the ball directly to Stoke attackers…

Our side that day makes for interesting reading: Arphexad, Henchoz, Ziege, Babbel, Hyypia, Smicer, Murphy, McAllister, Carragher, Fowler, Partridge. Subs: Heskey, Westerveld, Hamann, Barmby, Wright.

Carragher in midfield!

We went on to win the League Cup that year of course, collecting the FA Cup and the Europa League as well. What a debut season that’d be for Klopp if he could replicate Gerard Houllier’s achievements!
