Klopp comments on likelihood of business in final days of January transfer window

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool will not be rushed into buying players in the final days of the January transfer window just because of our busy schedule.

Yesterday’s 0-0 draw with West Ham United, in which Klopp made 10 changes following the midweek League Cup semi-final with Stoke City, set up an FA fourth-round replay for next month.

Should we win at Upton Park, we face the daunting and exhausting task of eight games throughout February, which will severely stretch a squad that is still depleted by injuries.

Although Klopp has not ruled out buying before Monday’s 11pm deadline, he has indicated that it would only be if an exceptional deal was in place, rather than to simply add to the squad.

“We will not buy a team for a rematch,” Klopp told the Echo. “We will not buy 10 or 11 players, play West Ham again and send them away again. I think it should not be the reason, one game more.

“We had a few games, three or four more than West Ham, in the short-term, but we could rest the team of Stoke. We will have fresh legs against Leicester and that’s the good news.

“In this moment it does not feel too brilliant to be honest but everyone will see when we go West Ham we will see the chance to go through. It’s an intensive time, hopefully we have players to come back from injury and we will have enough.

“What happens in the transfer market, you have to wait 48 hours, if something happens or not.”

Alex Teixeira is the name that has been most heavily linked with a move to Anfield, although The Mirror reports that negotiations have broken down over Shakhtar Donetsk’s £53m price tag.

We have also been credited with an interest in Joel Matip by Sky Sports, but the loan signing of Steven Caulker means that any deal for the Schalke defender is likely to wait until the summer.
