Yes, yes, we know we got him on a free transfer, but still…
Joel Matip, who has been touted by fans, ourselves, and even Jurgen Klopp as being the answer to our defensive woes next season, committed a shocking error in the Europa League for Schalke on Thursday night, with the mistake eventually leading to a goal.
The error came just after the hour mark in the German’s last-32 second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Ukrainians were winning 1-0 on aggregate at the time after an early Marlos goal had put them ahead following a 0-0 draw last week.
Matip failed to deal with a flick on and Taison took advantage, squaring the ball for Ferreyra to roll into an empty net.
Shakhtar went on to win 3-0.

Liverpool 1-0 Augsburg – report
Of course, we clearly shouldn’t be judging Matip on the basis of one error; if reports are to be believed he’s normally a strong, composed, and commanding centre-back.
That said, perhaps we should give Kolo a new contract after all – just in case…!
