A report in today’s Mirror by Steve Bates suggests Liverpool are interested in Leicester City’s Premier League winning midfielder Danny Drinkwater.
Bates writes that Jurgen Klopp and his team of scouts have been mightily impressed with the 26-year-old Englishman, whose performances helped Claudio Ranieri’s side to the unlikeliest of titles this season just gone.
As a result, Drinkwater is part of Roy Hodgson’s provisional England squad, although he’s one of the candidates to be cut when the manager names his final 23-man party.
Drinkwater’s enjoyed an excellent season, but Liverpool have splashed out on British players before on the back of impressive campaigns and lived to regret the decision before – Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Rickie Lambert and to a lesser extent Adam Lallana, just to name a few.
Drinkwater is a good passer and provides energy centrally, but he’s nowhere near as impressive as his midfield partner N’golo Kante. We’d much prefer if Liverpool were interested in the Frenchman, who’d add the bite, legs and the stability we need centrally.
