£2m disagreement preventing Liverpool getting deal done

Despite his cult following at the club and his excellent recent performances at the Euros, Joe Allen looks likely to make an Anfield exit this summer. He’s been most heavily linked with a return to Swansea, but we’re apparently demanding £2m more than the Welsh side are willing to pay, as reported by the Mirror.

As the report suggests, Swansea have already lodged an £8m bid for ‘the Welsh Xavi’, a bid we instantly rejected. We’re looking for at least £10m for the 26-year-old, and our demands are proving a stumbling block.

Having spent £15m on him a number of years ago (via the Mirror), we are clearly looking to recoup some of that expenditure. If we sell Allen we’ll definitely need to replace him, so we can’t just let him go for peanuts. His recent performances have also shown that he’s worth more than £8m, and there are many wanting to keep him at the club.

Depending on who we get in to replace him, it’s hard to argue with those calling for him to stay. He’s a fantastic squad player and could definitely have a place in the team, although the player himself may well be unhappy with a bit-part role at the club.

We’ve been linked with a number of midfielders this summer already, so if Allen really does leave then we’ve clearly got replacements lined up.
