‘Imagine what he’ll be like in four years’- Reds legend excited by youth star’s potential

Carra has really got us thinking now. Imagine Trent Alexander-Arnold a few years from now. Imagine how good a player he could become by then.

If his performance against Leeds last night was anything to go by then we can expect big things from the 18-year-old.

Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on the teenager and also turned a focus towards the work being carried out by the academy.

He told Sky Sports: “I think we now know why Jurgen Klopp went in with only one recognised right-back this season.”

“Sometimes you just look at a younger player and they look like an athlete. It’s perfect for the full-back position, and you think he’s 18 now, imagine what he’ll be like in four years’ time.”

“Clyne is an England right-back now, Trent Arnold has a long way to go, but if you’re going to have an 18-year-old as your second choice, with the size of the club and with Liverpool fighting on all fronts, it shows the faith Jurgen Klopp has got in him.”

“It’s massive credit to Jurgen Klopp, and the academy staff in Alex Inglethorpe, Steve Heighway, but never, ever forget it’s still the player who has got to do it on the pitch. He’s played twice and has been outstanding.”

Statistics show how busy Liverpool’s impressive youngster was against Leeds

The academy’s impetus towards quality over quantity has been crucial in moulding a group of highly talented youth players, most of which have the potential to one day break into the first team.

Liverpool’s run in the EFL Cup has given the club the chance to unleash this talent and give a lot of them a valuable lesson in playing in a competitive contest both with and against experienced players.

Klopp’s confidence in their ability has shone through in the freedom he has given them to express themselves in the first team.

The likes of Kevin Stewart, Ovie Ejaria and Alexander-Arnold himself have been able to put their qualities to practice without any restrictions.

They are under a manager that will do everything in his power to help them achieve what they are aiming for, providing they are prepared to continue working hard, learning and improving.
