Right now would be the worst time for Joel Matip to suddenly decide he wants to play international football again, as far as Liverpool’s season is concerned.
Cameroon boss Hugo Broos is keen for the defender to play in the African Cup of Nations despite having not played for his country since 2015.
Liverpool have backup options in central defence but Matip has been playing so well that we would hate to see his form for us disrupted.
The reaction from fans to the news is testament to how quickly he has settled down at Liverpool and how much he has impressed since arriving in the summer.
He is already a favourite amongst supporters and is key to our defence continuing to improve and reaching a level that makes this team serious title contenders.
Judging by social media, it is fair to say that the news hasn’t gone down well with Reds.
Dear Cameroon,
We’ve reviewed your request to take Matip to the African cup of nations & declined your request.
Regards, all #LFC fans.

I’ll cry if Cameroon take Joel Matip from us! I’ll genuinely break down

Cameroon want to take Joel Matip away from us?
Could we declare a war on them – and most importanly, could we win?
— Paul (@Kolology) December 6, 2016
If Matip goes the acon, not a chance we’re winning the league

@benndoherty @mrmontaye if matip goes to AFCON were in trouble, no matip mane or coutinho all at once
— rob g (@RobbieGraham4) December 7, 2016
We’re fucked if Matip goes to the AFCON. Replacing Mané was bad enough, but our best defender too? That’d be awful

Fine but it Matip goes AFCON & we sign no one we can wave goodbye to top 4 hopes without a shadow of a doubt. https://t.co/lM7EK7y0M2

God I hope either Matip rejects Cameroon’s renewed advances or the stories just aren’t true. He’s so so important to us already.
