Moreno’s latest comments prove he deserves much more credit from Liverpool fans

Alberto Moreno, or Albert Brown, as he’d be called if he was English, has become the butt of plenty of football jokes, almost regardless of performance now.

His defensive mishaps last season and the beginning of this saw him ridiculed by pundits and fans alike, and his funky hairstyles didn’t help much either.

But in reality, this is a Spanish international Jurgen Klopp rates who has remained 100% professional despite losing his place to James Milner at left-back.

Moreno’s had to content himself with cup appearances predominantly, and the fact we’ve got an EFL Cup semi-final to play tomorrow suggests he’s done pretty well.

In his three years at the club, the fullback has reached this stage every time, but is desperate to go one better and win some silverware this.

“In one semi-final we got knocked out by Chelsea and then last season we went all the way but had the disappointment of losing in the final,” he told the official website.

“Winning trophies is what everyone works for. We’re all hoping and aiming, not just me and the players, but the staff, the manager, the fans, to go all the way and win what would be my first trophy as a Liverpool player.

“We’re still involved in everything – the FA Cup, the League Cup and we’re going well in the league.

“Our plans are going well, our work is going well as a club this season so let’s hope we can keep it going.”

“I think that’s the most important thing in the tie, to go down there and make sure we come back with something positive because we’ve been lucky enough in the draw that we play the second leg in front of our own fans at Anfield.

“I’m not saying it hinges on it, but it would be very good to make things easier in the second leg.”

Moreno is unlikely to start against the Saints, with Klopp likely to choose his best XI. He should come back into the side next weekend against Plymouth though, when we travel to the South Coast for an unwanted FA Cup Replay.
