Steven Gerrard backs ‘world class’ Klopp and his January transfer approach
The Dutchman marshalled his side to a clean-sheet versus Leicester City in their 3-0 Sunday win.
Liverpool conceded three against Swansea on Saturday, and Gerrard clearly feels, as we all do, that something needs to be done about the backline.
“Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Van Dijk from Southampton,” Gerrard said, reported by the Echo.
“But we’ve had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon.”
Van Dijk is a brilliant player. But in this day and age, he’ll cost an absolute fortune – with half decent defenders rated in the £30m-£40m bracket.
The rangy centre-back will probably cost even more than that, likely to eclipse the £34m we spent to buy Sadio Mane last summer.
There’s also no actual indication that we’re interested in Van Dijk, with Jurgen Klopp seemingly happy with his current options…
