Talks of a new contract for our star players fails to spring the kind of excitement that it might have a few years back, especially having seen the likes of Luis Suarez depart after signing a long term deal.
According to the Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe, Liverpool’s owners have supposedly opened contract talks with Philippe Coutinho even with the Brazilian having three years left on his current deal.
Liverpool are also reportedly keen for there to be no release cause in his contract.
There is of course the immediate suspicion of this being a ploy to ensure the club receives big money for his services when Barcelona eventually swoop in at some point in the future.
Having said this, there is the old fashioned belief surrounding a new contract that this marks the first steps towards keeping our star man on Merseyside for years to come as we look to maintain our challenge with the Premier League’s top sides.
An opportunity to play Champions League football with the Reds could pose as an attraction that would keep Coutinho at the club for at least another season which is why it is so important that we finish strongly between now and May.
Many see losing him as a certainty now but we sense there will be a lot more to the decision as time progresses.
