Mignolet explains what happens for David Luiz goal

Simon Mignolet, Liverpool

Liverpool drew 1-1 with Chelsea tonight, thanks to an equaliser from Gini Wijnaldum in the second-half.

Simon Mignolet saved us at the death though with an excellent penalty save from Diego Costa, making up for a blunder in the first…

David Luiz put Chelsea ahead with a free-kick, but when the Brazilian struck the ball from 30-yards, our stopper was still organising his wall.

In fairness, the free-kick was fantastic and Mignolet would not have got to it anyway – but it would have been nice to see him looking at the ball when the set-piece was taken.

Mark Clatternburg did blow the whistle, but the Belgian simply didn’t hear it.

“I am happy but the feeling is disappointment after the game. We deserved the three points today,” the keeper told the reporters after the game, reported by BBC Sport.

“I didn’t hear the whistle when Luiz hit it early.”

Because of his overall performance though, we can forgive Mignolet, who in total has saved 50% of his Premier League penalties – a brilliant record.

He’ll keep his spot in the side, although he’ll need to keep his level up and avoid mistakes, as without cup football, Loris Karius will be desperate to win his spot back.
