Liverpool have scored 58 goals this season, which is more than any Premier League club – including leaders Chelsea (57), but in terms of chances created – we’re way out ahead.
This campaign, we’ve made 366 opportunities, while Chelsea are below 300. Even Southampton have created more than the runaway title favourites, in fact.
That’s according to this list by Twitter’s EPLStatman:
Chelsea are ten points clear of Spurs, who themselves have a four point lead on us – which goes to show not only the importance of an excellent defence, but also the importance of a clinical striker.
Combined, Chelsea and Spurs have conceded 40 goals, just six more than we have in total – but if we had a ‘Diego Costa’ or ‘Harry Kane’ able to finish off the chances we create – things could be a lot different.
After all, in 2013/14, our defence was shambolic, but we came within inches of a title purely because of our clinical strike-force.
In the summer it’s key we not only address the defence, but purchase a forward who can hit 20 league goals for the season. Costa is on 17, Kane on 19, Arsenal’s Sanchez on 17 and United’s Ibrahimovic on 15. Our centre-forward Firmino is on nine, having bagged ten last term.
Teams simply don’t win titles in England without prolific strikers.
