Telegraph outline LFC transfer plans RE centre-back purchase

While Liverpool are readily wanting to extend Dejan Lovren’s contract, the club are still looking at buying a centre-back this summer.

That’s according to respected Merseyside correspondent Chris Bascombe in the Telegraph.

Liverpool could buy £45m-rated playmaker for just £15m

However, Bascombe suggests our wanting a new defender for this position has more to do with squad depth than looking to actively replace Lovren or Joel Matip as the first-choice starting pair…

This pours water on reports that we’re desperate to buy Virgil van Dijk, who, for the money we’d have to spend on him, would surely expected to walk into the starting XI.

Matip and Lovren though have struggled with fitness this term and have played less than half of Liverpool’s games alongside each other – a big problem when looking for defensive consistency.

At Empire of the Kop, we think a top class centre-back is a necessity, and hope the war-chest Jurgen Klopp has supposedly been promised (The Times) is spent on at least one.

Van Dijk fits the bill. He’s strong, composed and aerially excellent. Extending Lovren’s contract is fine, providing he’s competing with some real talent for a starting spot next term.
