Angry Mignolet tells fans he doesn’t need to be criticised

Simon Mignolet says that feedback on his performances by fans and the media isn’t necessarily helpful.

Last week, the Belgian came in for huge criticism after his shocking performance in the defeat to Spurs at Wembley, in which he was partly responsible.

His spill for Tottenham’s third goal was pretty unforgivable, but Jurgen Klopp kept him in the side for the 3-0 victory over Huddersfield two days ago – and he kept a clean-sheet in a very dominant performance.

“I don’t need anyone telling me when I have had a good or a bad game, I know that myself,” he told Sky Sports.

“It is just about staying calm, not getting carried away with what is said because that is part and parcel of playing for Liverpool – you have to deal with it as it’s not going to change.

“I didn’t have much to do [against Huddersfield] so it wasn’t like I was going to help the team but at the same time sometimes you can crumble underneath the pressure.

“That is not going to happen to me.”

For us, Mignolet has proven too many times that he isn’t good enough for Liverpool, but we’d still prefer him in the side than Loris Karius, who’s never impressed us.

We’d like to see Danny Ward given an opportunity, but the young Welshman is injured – which is unfortunate considering he might have been considered for selection otherwise.

On Wednesday, Karius will start, but he’s unlikely to have an awful lot to do if Maribor are anywhere near as bad as they were for the 7-0 drubbing we handed out in Slovenia.
