Lazio are on the verge of getting Stefan de Vrij to put pen to paper on an extension to his contract which expires at the end of this season.
The Dutchman has been superb for the Italian giants this term, a mainstay at centre-back for the Rome outfit.
However, de Vrij’s contract will include a €25m release-clause, which will allow him to leave in 2018 very easily, but with Lazio getting a financial return instead of losing him on a Bosman.
(Perhaps something Liverpool should have considered with Emre Can…)
This information is according to Italian outlet Il Messaggero, translated for us by Sport Witness, who are utterly convinced de Vrij will leave Serie A.
They claim Atletico Madrid are also interested, as are Liverpool, whose defensive issues are very well publicised.
Jurgen Klopp’s primary centre-back target is Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, but there’s no evidence his club will change their stance and allow his exit in January.
Liverpool do have the ever-improving Joe Gomez as an option, but with Klopp still intent on deploying the 20-year-old at right-back, it’s two of Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan in the middle at the moment.
De Vrij would be a terrific signing, in January or next summer.
