Didi Hamann claimed on Twitter last night that Nemanja Matic would have been the ‘perfect’ summer signing for Liverpool.
The Serbian battler transferred from champions Chelsea to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United in an odd move that surprised many.
Matic had been ever-present in Antonio Conte’s debut season, forming a brilliant midfield partnership with N’Golo Kante, but the Blues offloaded him and strengthened United in the process.
When asked by a fan if Matic would have been a ‘good’ signing for Jurgen Klopp, Hamann’s response was unequivocal.

Matic is becoming increasingly immobile, but he’s unbelievably solid and once he has the ball he’s far too strong to dispossess.
In many ways actually, he’s similar to Hamann was during the German’s playing days: a calming presence who helps win the ball but also define rhythm and tempo.
That kind of physicality at the base of our midfield could have definitely helped this term, with Klopp currently rotating between Jordan Henderson and Emre Can at no.6.
Matic is an upgrade on both, but at 29, he’s not the kind of player FSG shell out big money on.
We just hope they put their hands in their pockets this January. It’s blindingly obvious that we need improvements in defence and midfield and we hope at least one of those areas are addressed.
Having witnessed the mistakes of this summer though, we’re not holding out much hope.
