Jurgen Klopp has revealed he was under thinly-veiled instructions to play Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool’s 5-0 Boxing Day win over Swansea City.
The decision to do so was met with reward as the 19-year-old fired home the Reds’ third to register his first Premier League goal for the club.
His celebrations proceeded to reflect the Scouse pride and youthful passion the Anfield faithful have come to adore him for since breaking into the first team.
Klopp admits it was the teenager’s mum who had dropped subtle orders to play her son earlier in the week.
The German told reporters: “It’s fantastic. His mother told me last week that on Boxing Day the whole part of the family from America would be there. I asked ‘is that an order for him to be in the line-up?’!” as reported by the Mirror.
“First half, like the whole team he could have done better but he was fantastic and scored a good goal. Good news for the family Alexander-Arnold.”
Subject to regular rotation with Joe Gomez, Alexander-Arnold has filled in admirably for the injured Nathaniel Clyne so far this season.
Besides persisting to impress with his sheer tenacity and work ethic, Liverpool’s newest local favourite has displayed the kind of grounded mentality capable of spring-boarding a long and successful career on Merseyside.
A will to constantly improve and pay back his manager for the faith he has shown in him continues to inspire performances that demand attention.
A fitting way to top off another incredible year for the defender.
