Manager Neil Critchley admits he is fearing the worst after striker Rhian Brewster was stretchered off with an ankle injury whilst playing for Liverpool’s U23s.
Brewster was sent to hospital after landing heavily from an aerial duel during Friday night’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester City.
There are now fears looming on Merseyside that the teenager will be resigned to a lengthy spell on the sidelines given initial signs.
“It’s not looking good. He fell awkwardly and it’s down towards the bottom near his ankle,” Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com.
“He will be going to hospital. I don’t want to speculate too much but he’s in a lot of pain and hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks, but we fear the worst a little bit at the moment.”
The injury threatens to arrive as an incredibly cruel setback for the young striker, who has thrived on both the domestic and international stage over the past year.
Besides being promoted to the U23s towards the beginning of 2017, Brewster also earned a place on the first-team bench for April’s clash with Crystal Palace.
After starring in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in May, in which England finished runners-up, the teenager saw his promising chances of featuring under Jurgen Klopp during pre-season shattered by injury.
Brewster proceeded to respond in admirable fashion, asserting himself as a prominent figure in the U23s and winning the Golden Boot in England’s Under-17 World Cup-winning campaign in October.
Any period out of action would be a crushing and unfair blow to the talented youngster’s upward trajectory.
The evidence is already there to suggest, however, he has the character to prevent injury from dictating his attitude or progress.
