Roma have emerged as new contenders in the race to sign Daniel Sturridge from Liverpool.
The Italian giants are considering swooping in to snatch a deal ahead of Inter Milan, who Sturridge has been strongly tipped to join on loan.
Edin Dzeko sealing a move to Chelsea would trigger Roma to make their move for the Reds’ 63-goal striker, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.
Sturridge is expected to depart in January in search of regular first team football, with the hope of earning a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
The Englishman has managed only 14 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season, scoring just three goals.
Injury issues have been a cruel and persistent hindrance to his career since his standout 2013/2014 season, in which he scored 24 goals as part of a formidable partnership with Luis Suarez.
Having been firmly resigned to second in the pecking order behind Roberto Firmino, Sturridge finds himself in need of a fresh challenge on a fresh platform.
Serie A could prove an interesting stage on which to exercise his undeniable natural talent in a slow tempo game and, crucially, away from the British spotlight.
At 28-years-old, a man of his goal scoring prowess needs to be playing on a weekly basis and given a fair opportunity to fight for a place at potentially his final major international tournament.
If he does leave, Liverpool fans will have good reason to demand he is replaced in order to maintain Klopp’s array of attacking options.
Firmino, regardless of his stunning form, can’t be expected to lead the line in every single game between now and the end of the season, nor can young Dominic Solanke be expected to fill the Sturridge-shaped void.
