James Rodriguez is bordering on Marco Reus territory in becoming the undying Liverpool transfer rumour with little chance of materialising, let alone being true.
The Colombian has been regularly touted as a target for the Reds, without the club ever quite turning in his direction.
Rodriguez signed for Real Madrid for £71million shortly after starring in the 2014 World Cup, but has since struggled to live up to his hefty price-tag among the Spanish club’s array of attacking talent.
His stuttering progress saw him secure a two-year loan deal with Bayern Munich in 2017, where he has similarly found consistency difficult to come by.
The 26-year-old is planning on cutting his deal in Germany short in aid of returning to Madrid and pursuing a move to Liverpool, according to Diario Gol. Make of that what you will.
Rumours linking Rodriguez to an Anfield switch are undoubtedly fuelled by an obsession over who Liverpool will eventually turn to as their Philippe Coutinho replacement.
Jurgen Klopp reluctantly agreed to sanction the Brazilian’s £142million move to Barcelona last month, but remained happy enough with his squad not to make an immediate reinvestment.
Monaco’s Thomas Lemar seemingly remains a primary target, although there continues to be uncertainty surrounding his reported £90million price-tag.
