It’s fair to say that Liverpool fans were fairly impressed with Matthijs de Ligt on Monday evening!
The 18-year-old (yes, 18…) started alongside Virgil van Dijk for the Netherlands, who put in a world-class performance to destroy European champions Portugal 3-0.

Ajax’s wonderkid assisted two goals, one of which was scored by van Dijk, and essentially pocketed Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s second best player.
Not bad for someone born in 1999.
Barcelona have been credited with an interest in de Ligt by the Daily Mail and scouted him against England a few days ago, but Liverpool fans now want him on Jurgen Klopp’s shortlist.
Neither Dejan Lovren or Joel Matip have been able to earn the position next to van Dijk at the heart of our defence outright, while Joe Gomez is used as a right-back.
In many ways, de Ligt ticks plenty of boxes for Liverpool. He’s young, has enormous potential, plays for a club that sells their players and is Dutch, meaning he should be able to form a natural partnership with van Dijk alongside him.
We hope the club considers it!
