Liverpool’s scouting mission to find a new no.6 could be set for an extended stay in Italy after seemingly losing out in the battle for Jorginho.

The Napoli midfielder is expected to join Manchester City after the player’s agent recently indicated imminent negotiations over a deal.

With this in mind, the Reds have been forced to adjust their wish-list as they prepare for life without Juventus-bound Emre Can.

Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira is the latest name to drift onto the radar on the back of his impressive Serie A season, according to Italian outlet CalcioMercato.

With Jorginho’s likely exit comes inevitable interest from Napoli as they seek to fill the void left by the Brazilian-born Italian international.

Torreira is lauded as a stern defensive midfielder, with a physicality defiant of his small stature and a reliability as an intelligent foundation on the ball.

The Uruguayan’s contributions as an orthodox holding option have also evidenced alleged attacking roots through a long-range shooting prowess and a vision capable of bridging the gap to his forwards.

Liverpool’s injury woes in the midfield department this season have served as further confirmation of the need for greater strength in depth in order to mount a serious title challenge next season.

Adding further protection for his defence is arguably Klopp’s biggest recruitment priority not only in light of Can’s exit but also to afford Naby Keita the attacking freedom he deserves upon his arrival.
