When Xherdan Shaqiri is on his game, he truly is a tough man to stop.
Liverpool’s summer signing produced a commanding performance as Switzerland strutted to a 6-0 UEFA Nations League win over Iceland on Saturday.
Shaqiri proved extremely difficult to detect throughout as he floated across the pitch to operate effectively both out-wide and in a central playmaking role.
His impact in the latter served as further evidence of his ability to give Jurgen Klopp another no.10 option at Liverpool following the failure to find an orthodox replacement for Philippe Coutinho in the summer.
A prevailing feature to his display was his work ethic to constantly seek the ball and offer himself as an option for those around him.
Besides offering the intensity Klopp craves from his players, the former Stoke City man also demonstrated his threat in set-piece scenarios. Both Haris Seferovic and Admir Mehmedi turned free-kick deliveries from Shaqiri into goals, with the £13m signing himself also finding the net via a glancing deflection from his curling strike.
Liverpool’s hectic schedule over the coming months is likely to result in greater involvement for Shaqiri, who is yet to make his full debut.
Here’s a look at his best bits from the weekend…
