Virgil van Dijk has admitted that referee Martin Atkinson was right to point to the spot during the match with Manchester City.
Riyad Mahrez blazed over from 12 yards and let him off the hook, but the Dutchman was quick to recognise his error.
Van Dijk told Sky Sports via the Liverpool Echo: “It was not smart to dive in there. It was a penalty and it shouldn’t have happened, but I’m very happy we didn’t concede.
“I watched it because I wanted to get the rebound if he missed it but obviously I’m very happy it didn’t go in.”

The Reds could have lost due to his error of judgement, but thankfully Van Dijk got away with one – overall, both teams were worthy of a point on the day and remain joint-top of the Premier League.
Leroy Sane is a tough opponent to tackle and Van Dijk will learn quickly from his mistake, which fortunately went unpunished.
