Bayern sign World Cup star; but Robben wishes they’d drawn someone else

Bayern Munich have made an astute signing, securing the signature of Benjamin Pavard from Stuttgart for a bargain fee of €35m, according to Sky Sports.

However, the French World Cup winner will only officially arrive in the summer, so won’t be an option for the Germans against Liverpool next month.

Liverpool play Bayern in the Champions League and are actually favourites for the tie, despite only scraping through our Group ahead of Napoli.

Still, Bayern will present an almighty test, especially as they’ve had the advantage of a winter break and will have plenty of experienced performers at the very highest level.

One of which is the seemingly evergreen Arjen Robben, who at 34-years-old, is still Bayern’s biggest offensive threat.

Interestingly, the Dutchman has flatly admitted that he didn’t want to draw us, labelling us one of the competition’s favourites.

“Liverpool are doing well again, just like last year when they made it to the final, and I also see them as a favourite for the Champions League this season,” the Dutchman told FootballOranje.com, cited in RTE.

“For us, it was perhaps the worst possible draw, but it’s going to be a great challenge. We have to look at ourselves, keep working hard and improve ourselves. If we have a good day and play the way we want, I’m sure we’ll make it very difficult for Liverpool.”

There’s no noises like that coming out of the Liverpool dressing room, so we like the fact this is the Bayern opinion.

We obliterated them in a friendly a while back, but the two-legged affair will obviously be ten times more difficult.

Still, if everyone’s fit, we can progress to the quarters; which is likely a minimum obligation after losing the final last term.
