Liverpool opponents suffer major injury setback ahead of league meeting

Marko Arnautovic is an early doubt to feature for West Ham when they host Liverpool at the London Stadium next Monday.

The striker was substituted in the 77th minute of Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Wolves after landing awkwardly from an aerial challenge.

He was subsequently seen leaving Molinuex on crutches and is now set to undergo further examination ahead of a meeting with the Premier League leaders.

His absence would mark a major blow amid something of a mini injury-crisis for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who have won just once in the league since the turn of the year.

Discussing the injury after the game, the Hammers’ boss told the BBC: “It will not be an easy injury.”

“I hope he hasn’t any problems but we must review him with an examination. It was a hard kick in his foot and I’m disappointed about that because we have just 15 fit players.”

Liverpool are burdened by selection troubles of their own as they prepare to face Leicester City on Wednesday without a recognised right-back.

Jurgen Klopp is still without Trent Alexander-Arnold (knee) and Joe Gomez (fractured leg), as well as James Milner following his red card in the 4-3 win over Crystal Palace.

The void at full-back could see 18-year-old Rafael Camacho slot into defence having made his senior debut there in the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Wolves, before carrying out the responsibility again as a 94th minute substitute against Palace.

Virgil van Dijk does, however, look likely to be available after overcoming sickness throughout the week to return to training.

Manchester City’s defeat to Newcastle means Liverpool have the chance to move seven points clear at the top of the table with a win over Leicester.
