Reds ‘to open contract talks’ with forward after impressing Klopp in training

According to Football Insider, Jurgen Klopp has instructed the Reds to open contract talks with Divock Origi having been impressed with the forward’s contributions so far this season.

The Belgian has scored a couple of absolutely huge goals over the course of the campaign – not least that late, late one in the Merseyside derby – and with only 12 months left on his current deal, it would seem that he either has to re-sign this summer or be sold before he’s lost on a free.

Klopp is said to be impressed with Origi’s attitude around the training ground, which is something he values highly, and is shown by the number of times he has turned to him either off the bench or from the start.

Origi only has six goals, but two of those came against Barcelona in the 4-0 win, one was the aforementioned winner in the Merseyside derby, and one was the late header against Newcastle United when it looked like his teammates were out of ideas – not a bad collection of vital strikes.

Even if another attacking player is signed this summer to provide extra cover for Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, signing Origi up to a new contract would mean another option up top as well, and one who is used to scoring big goals.

Whoever Michael Edwards signs for Klopp this summer, there can certainly be a role for Origi as well – not many would have seen that coming this time last year.
