Spurs ‘set to move for £54 million Reds target’

Tottenham are prepared to pay £54 million for Ajax star David Neres, a player who has been linked with the Reds several times over the past few months, according to Calciomercato.

The creative attacking player impressed as Ajax made the Champions League semi-finals last year, and he scored 18 times in 50 games across all competitions.

At 22, and with five caps for his country, Brazil, Neres would appear on paper to be the kind of profile of player the Reds might target, but there is no suggestion that a deal could be on the cards to bring him to Anfield at this stage.

Jurgen Klopp has repeatedly said the Reds will be doing little or no business this summer, much to the disappointment of many fans, and unless a genuinely world-class talent became readily available, that stance is unlikely to change.

Neres is a great player and could be world-class one day – but he isn’t there yet.

Everton have also been linked with Neres, but if Spurs were to make a move for him, he would surely head there. He might well be Mauricio Pochettino’s back-up option if Spurs can’t get Paulo Dybala from Juventus.
