Reds coach John Achterberg offers update on Alisson’s recovery

John Achterberg, the Reds’ goalkeeping coach, says Alisson is doing well in his recovery from a calf injury that he sustained on the opening day of the season against Norwich City.

Alisson has already missed the UEFA Super Cup final and the Premier League game at Southampton, and will not be back for Arsenal on Saturday, either.

Speaking to The Athletic, Achterberg said: “Ali is good. He’s in every day for treatment and they try to improve things. He’s able to do some fitness work in the gym without using his leg. It’s difficult, but you have to try to look forward and be positive.”

Achterberg also hinted that Alisson might be back soon after the international break at the start of September, with Adrian set to deputise until then despite his howler at Southampton last weekend.

The Dutchman added: “They haven’t given us a specific time he’ll be out as it’s difficult to say how quickly it will heal. That’s all with the medics. There’s an international break coming up and we’ll have to wait and see how long it takes after that.”

As well as Adrian did against Chelsea, getting Alisson back in the side will be hugely important. The Brazilian is the best goalkeeper in the world and you always want the best players possible on the pitch for every game.
