Jamie Redknapp hails ‘brilliant’ Reds man who’s finally getting the plaudits he deserves

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp says that Jordan Henderson had the toughest job in football when he took over the Reds captaincy from Steven Gerrard.

Redknapp compared the situation to David Moyes taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United boss, saying no one wants to be the immediate successor (though in United’s case, it seems no one has succeeded at the job at all as of yet, four managers down the line).

Writing for the Daily Mail, Redknapp explained: “You don’t want to follow the man. You want to follow the man who followed the man.

“A lot of people might just see the letter ‘C’ alongside a name on the team sheet and think nothing more of it. You do when you are the captain of Liverpool football club, believe me.

“You can always count on him to give his all. He has not got Gerrard’s X-Factor in midfield, but who has? He was one of a kind. But Henderson is still worth his weight in gold for what he offers Liverpool, on and off the pitch. He does what he does brilliantly.”

Henderson has not always been given the respect he deserves, but now he’s a Champions League-winning captain, perhaps that is changing. Last week, Xabi Alonso heaped praise on him, and now Redknapp has done the same.

Having ticked the Champions League off the list of trophies to win with the Reds, Henderson will want to pick up the Premier League title next. Do that, and surely no one would be able to say a word against him.
