Virgil van Dijk has heaped huge praise on one of his Liverpool teammates following Saturday’s Merseyside derby defeat of Everton.
The Reds skipper had a brilliant game himself as he helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to their third clean sheet of the season but the Netherlands international was keen to highlight the performance of midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
Our new No. 8 was featuring in a Merseyside derby for the first time and although it may have been Mo Salah’s brace that earned Liverpool all three points at Anfield, Szoboszlai was his usual lively self in the engine room.
“Szoboszlai is a different breed,” van Dijk told TNT Sports (via HITC). “His energy, he keeps running, he wants the ball at all times, he counter-presses – that’s what we want,”
Since joining the Reds from RB Leipzig in the summer Szoboszlai has hit the ground running at L4.
His energy and dynamism in the middle of the park is everything we lacked last term and it’s no coincidence that his arrival has resulted in a strong start to the campaign for the Merseysiders.
The Hungary international, alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch, ensured Liverpool won the midfield battle against Everton and the £65m man is gradually becoming one of the first names on Klopp’s team sheet.
Long may his strong performances his continue as he looks to pick up some silverware during his debut campaign on Merseyside.
