Gary Neville has claimed that Andoni Iraola is being ‘undermined’ by the Liverpool hierarchy in terms of their recruitment this summer.
In contrast to the £446m spending spree a year ago, the Reds have been worryingly quiet in this transfer window, with only two new signings secured since the end of last season (one of whom has arrived on loan).
Even with LFC reportedly on the verge of completing the marquee addition Bradley Barcola, a few positions on the pitch have been causes for concern in the early weeks of the campaign, and there’s precious little time for those to be remedied before the Tuesday night deadline.
Neville urges Iraola to demand last-minute signings from FSG
Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the Sky Sports pundit sympathised with the Liverpool head coach and urged him to issue a firm ultimatum to club chiefs today regarding incoming transfers.
The ex-Manchester United defender said: “I’m not sure what’s going on there in respect of their recruitment… I don’t think they have the numbers in defence. I think they’re leaving Andoni Iraola well short.
“I know Iraola looks like a gentleman when you see him in interviews, but if I was him, I’d be demanding something in the next 48 hours, because it will cost him. Liverpool will concede a lot of goals if those two play at full-back in a normal traditional back four with that midfield.”

Neville added: “There’s real excitement [with their forwards] and if they added a defensive midfield player – a really good one – and two good full-backs, I think they’d have a really good chance; but they’re being undermined by a lack of recruitment in those full-back areas and in central midfield. They need to do something.”

Most Liverpool fans would surely agree with Neville
It might go against the natural disposition of Liverpool fans to agree with the Sky pundit given his Old Trafford leanings, but he’s spot-on when he says that Iraola has been let down by the club’s hierarchy since replacing Arne Slot as head coach.
The dismal 2025/26 should’ve been the trigger for plentiful transfer activity this summer – even if nobody expected another £446m to be spent, there are several areas of the squad where the Reds have seemed light on numbers.
Jeremie Frimpong is the only senior right-back available with Conor Bradley sidelined, and the Dutchman has been unconvincing at the start of this season, while natural left wingers Victor Munoz, Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo have all been deployed on the opposite flank.

The defensive midfield area remains a genuine concern, with Wataru Endo not used in either of Iraola’s first two official games in charge and Stefan Bajcetic – who hasn’t played for Liverpool since May 2024 – on the verge of a permanent transfer to Celta Vigo.
The Reds now have a strong selection of wide attackers but are only an Alexander Isak injury away from being without a recognised centre-forward, with Hugo Ekitike out for the rest of 2026.
Having failed to adequately address those positions (if at all) over the past three months, Anfield chiefs will be hard pressed to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the remaining 36 hours of the transfer window and have thus far let Iraola down massively.

this is what Arsenal (yes, Arsenal) did to bolster their defence. Arsenal after a busy summer signed Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães (£75 million) and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa (£51 million)!
Apparently a report on Hughes is that he has been moonlighting with efforts already commenced for his soon to be Saudi employers – well that makes sense of this transfer window debacle!
But my very own ‘here we go’ is that we are going for the cheaper alternative to bolster our ‘NON EXISTENT DEFENSIVE MIDDLE’ by buying a couple of semi-trailers to permanently park in the middle. Either that or move that stellar defensive performer Jeremie Frimpong into the centre to display his obvious brute physical strength – no joking. YNWA
My last post was not shown because of my I admit caustic comments about our poor transfer window and the fact that we seem for 3 years now to pretend we do not have a Mack Truck problem down the middle of our pitch…Well we do and the lack of attention there again means to me that we will struggle to contain better EPL sides than the first two teams that have exploited that area with just average attacking/defensive midfielders….It would appear also that Hughes has had more on his plate to attend to than just LFC business? YNWA.
Thank you MR Gary Neville, infact, this just showed how clueless the transfer team is, Liverpool should be ashamed of themselves, imagine, someone from Old Trafford will be the one advising you to back your new coach in a transfer window that is almost closed, you people should be ashamed of yourselves. Everybody has been crying for a defensive midfielder for quite a long time and you people are so adamant, is it that you people are not seeing what the fans are seeing? The midfield is so porous due lack of a proper number 6 and you are reluctantly addressing it, though it’s never you can still make the fans happy before the window closes, please just do the needful and back this Coach. Give us Minteh and a quality number 6 and if can add defensive minded number 2, then Liverpool will be solid. Please just do it and make all the fans happy.🙏🙏🙏
Just give us a defensive midfielder, we all want to see a defensive midfielder.
Iraola is head coach, not a manager, he’s got no say on transfers. Richard Hughes is busy with other players for other clubs. Which sums up the shambles at Liverpool football club, Djed Spence should have been bought by us and for just 30 million.
He can play left or right side.
We’ve missed the boat in numerous players at full back and defensive midfielder.
Iraola wont last the season with the squad he’s got, big trouble ahead when you have to rotate players in the champions league between premier league.
It’s a championship squad, not a premier league squad that’s fit for challengers for the top prizes.
Its going to get weaker again when Gakpo is sold to Manchester city.
Get rid of charlatan owners FSG. Or there’s worse to come.
How right you are! Nail on the head! Liverpool’s recruitment team have been utterly inept.
What we’re seeing unfold here in the dying hours of the transfer window beggars belief. Could it be that FSG are preparing their exit? They’ve already sold a considerable chunk of the club and might be heading towards a minority holding, with an eventual exit in mind. They never have been football people, and show very little interest in the game. They’ve only ever been interested in the money side and growing the asset.

My apologies, ed. got that all wrong!😤
